As gearheads, we are always looking for the latest and greatest in biking technology. This can range from changing out gear sprockets for better performance, to even upgrading your entire bike for a lighter frame. As much as we would want the latest and greatest bikes, we all face the reality that it may not make financial sense to spend $7,150 for a Cannondale Scalpel-Si Carbon 2 Mountain Bike, despite it being light, responsive, and smooth with its Ai Offset Drivetrain and FOX Float DPS Performance Elite EVOL rear shock.
However, if there was a way to get that bike at a much lower price, would you take it? One option is to wait until the end-of-season clearance sales as bike shops make room for next year’s models. Even then, pricing can still be steep. Another option is to brave the open market for a used bike. However, you run the risk of obtaining the bike, though at a great price, from an owner who did not take care of their equipment. Imagine getting the bike you’ve always wanted, such as an Orbea Orca M20 Road Bike with its full carbon frame and easy-shifting Shimano Ultegra Drivetrain, for a great price only to find out that you missed a crack in the frame or a worn-out bottom bracket, resulting in hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in repairs. Plus, many bike warranties do not transfer with a change in ownership, so you’re out of luck when trying to file a warranty claim.
There is one option that does address all of these issues of price and warranty- demo bikes. Demo bikes are bikes that have been used as part of a company or manufacturer demo fleet. These bikes generally show signs of use, as expected with all demo bikes, but are not only at a better price point but also come with a manufacturer’s warranty. With all of this, demo bikes are well worth considering as a viable option for your next big bike upgrade.
How Does a Demo Bike Come to Be?
Once a demo bike is pulled from the fleet to be sold, it’s not as if you can just buy right then and there. Instead, at Sun & Ski Sports, the bike goes through a rigorous process to get it ready before it is even available. This process includes a thorough inspection and cleaning process. If there are any issues such as a worn parts, Sun & Ski Sports will replace the parts back to our standards. It all starts with…
Completely Disassemble the Bike
The bike gets disassembled from top to bottom. This makes it much easier to clean and inspect the bike in its entirety. Nobody wants a dirty bike.
Thoroughly Clean Parts and Frame Inspection
All the parts get a good scrub in an aqueous cleaning solution that easily removes dirt and grime accumulated during the bike’s use. While the parts are soaking, we take the time to wash down the frame to get it as close to showroom condition as possible. At the same time, we inspect the frame for any damage. If the frame is damaged, the bike will not be sold.
Reassemble the Bike
After all the parts and the frame are cleaned, we start the reassembly process. During this part of the process, we make sure to properly lube and grease areas that require it. We also make sure to tighten any bolts to torque specifications. Essentially, the bike will be ready to go right out of the box.
Replace Parts to Our Standards
If at any point during the inspection process, we find a part that does not meet our standards, we will replace it with something that is equal or even better.
After we reassemble the bike and complete the inspection process, the bike is now ready for some pictures. These pictures will not only show the exact bike you will be purchasing, but also detail any blemishes such as scratches, rash, or chips. This way, you know exactly what you are getting and can buy with peace of mind. The photos will be uploaded to Sun & Ski Sports’ website where it is now ready to purchase.
