Nighttime Running: Safety First

Some runners prefer to hit the road in darkness, while others run in the dark out of necessity. Whether you’re getting up in the pre-dawn hours to fit in your run before work or lacing up your shoes in the evening to unwind after a long day, it’s important to wear gear that keeps you visible and safe.

Some ways to add reflective material to your workout gear include:

  • Shoes: Most running shoe manufacturers include strategically-placed reflective material in their shoe designs. You might not notice it, but the cars coming up behind you will.
  • Jogging shorts: If you regularly run in the dark, consider buying a few pairs of jogging shorts with reflective strips or panels for additional visibility.
  • Running shirts: To keep your upper body visible, look for running shirts with reflective stripes or panels.
  • Accessories: Many running accessories now include reflective strips. For summer night running, seek out a mesh cap with reflective strips. For dark winter mornings, look for a hat or earband with a reflective patch or logo.
