What makes the outdoors great? It’s the trees, the animals, and the fresh air. It’s the majestic natural wonders and the memories created with family and friends. While we should appreciate every day as a time to appreciate nature, Earth Day is a day where we bring awareness of many environmental issues that affect the world that we live in. Many of the adventures we love and cherish happen outdoors. Therefore, we feel it important to highlight some of the green brands at Sun & Ski Sports that not only have outstanding products but go above and beyond by living and breathing an environmentally focused mission.
Many of us know about Patagonia and it is one of the many green brands at Sun & Ski Sports. With a mission statement of “We’re in business to save our home planet,” Patagonia is one of the leaders in providing green products and sustainable solutions in the apparel industry. Their mission goes further than their sustainable products as they use sustainably sourced materials to reduce pollution within their production and supply chain. Throughout the entire process, Patagonia commits to a brighter and greener planet. Because of this, Patagonia is B-Corp certified and has won many awards including the UN’s Champions of the Earth Award in 2019. You can find Patagonia items in a variety of products ranging from technical shells to casualwear.
Another one of the many green brands at Sun & Ski Sports is Picture. Established in France, Picture was created with one criterion: 100% committed (to) responsibility and sustainability-driven eco-design. With this goal in mind, Picture set off on creating great products that centered around their eco-minded goals. This includes an outerwear and boardshorts line created with recycled polyester, reducing waste in their production process by using it within their jacket lining, and even an organically sourced ski/snowboard helmet line.
Obermeyer produces some of the best outerwear for your winter adventures with its award-winning processes and designs. Based out of the Aspen area of Colorado, Obermeyer also believes in sustainability through “stepping lightly on the planet.” Through its use of products, practices, and passion, Obermeyer looks forward to building a sustainable future through its products. This includes ethical sourcing and distribution through its supply chain by partnering with environmentally conscientious suppliers and Bluesign Certified Partners. Even their headquarters is part of their plan as they are moving to become 100% solar powered.
tentree’s philosophy on the environment is summed up with their mission of “Earth-First.” This mission is the basis for their goal of planting ten trees for every purchase. To date, tentree has planted over 56 million trees through its program. Their commitment to the Earth doesn’t stop there. Besides planting trees, tentree is committed to using sustainable essentials along with focusing on ethical manufacturing practices. The focus on using sustainable materials has led them to use TENCEL™, recycled polyester, organic cotton, and hemp. They have even gone as far as committing to using only virgin packaging materials by 2023.
You may know TOMS as a shoe company. But did you know that they are also providing ways to do good for the environment? While TOMS “stand(s) for tomorrow,” they also believe that a “thriving humanity means a thriving planet.” Besides being a certified B Corporation, they are expanding their use of sustainable cotton to 100% by 2025, committing to a reduced carbon footprint, using sustainably managed forests for 100% of their packaging, and continue to use eco-friendly materials in their products.
